When en France, one must flea.
Here’s a peek at a few of my favorite new finds…
I never met an old french soup bowl that I didn’t love, and these have a fun “lion cub head” instead of the traditional French lion head design.
I’ve coveted old French jam jars for years and years – at long last, this summer a beautiful dappled collection shall return home to A Perfect Event.
The best flea market in Paris in my humble opinion, is Marche de Vanves, on the south end of Paris, near the famous Montparnasse neighborhood of famous writers and artists.
Another treasure I’ve longed for each summer as we stroll the marche – antique oyster plates!
These are from a second market, Marche d’Aligre, on the east side of Paris, near Bastille.
As a young, wistful teenager, dreaming of future party planning days, I loved my friend Katy’s mother’s collection of oyster plates, hanging so elegantly in her dining room.
These will be the foundation for our upcoming DIY Decadence Trends Party at A Perfect Event on September 7, noon – two, please join us – and see them brought to life in Chicago.
Old, charming carafes…
My mother has the most beautiful old wooden bowls for salads – growing up every single salad she served looked like a Bon Appetit cover.
She helped me spy these two bowls last week, and now I can enjoy a new generation collection in my own home. Yay.
These may be my number one find.
Perfect for all of our upcoming Thanksgiving photo shoots.
What do you think?
Oh how I love mustard pots…
And cafe au lait anything, everything, always.
Amitie – friendship.
Oh, how I love this find!
This big copper cauldron almost got away.
Well, actually, it did get away.
Mom found it at Marche d’Aligre, for an amazing price.
But it was so big!
And I was thinking about how heavy it was – and how much room it would take in my suitcase – and had a flash wave of being practical, and walking away.
Then, I mentioned it to Mike, who said “What? You didn’t buy it? Go back!”
So, we did the next day, and it was gone…
And I was crushed.
Then, it just so happened, we found almost the same one, but round in shape instead of oval (I did prefer the oval one, rats!) at Marche de Vanves, and for almost the same great price.
Home it comes, to chill wine and champagne at our next bar.
Another treasure from my childhood – my mom’s old ironstone bowls.
Love this oval platter – but ugggh – it is so heavy too.
The kind vendor told me she loves it for arranging asparagus in spring…
These olive cutting boards are amazing.
And I placed a huge order – for hundreds – to be shipped straight away to A Perfect Event.
The artist said he couldn’t charge me for the small one on the right – as it had a “bad mark”.
See the black spot?
I told him I pay extra for those “worms”!
The long one on the left is for saucisson, sausage.
This collection of French children’s Fairy Tale china is going to make the most enchanting baby shower detail, non?
Now it’s your turn.
What Paris flea find is your favorite?
We’ll style it up when we return, and send you a photo, bien sur.
Don’t you just love the great adventure of travels abroad?
And perhaps even more exciting, the cool and colorful food find trends in far away regions of the world?
Planning parties daily, hundreds of days a year, means we need – and we live for – fresh fun new food menus.
From herbed summer flatbreads with peaches, basil and corn…
To inventive French salads with mint, almonds, squash…
The beauty of French produce abounds.
When in Paris, et le Marais, you must visit our favorite le Mary Celeste, for fantastic food and tres chic cocktail trends.

Do tell – and share – what are your favorite small plates of the season for entertaining?
Happiest Mother’s Day to you, from my family, to yours.
Every woman I know is a mother.
Mothering, caring, loving, in so many different ways, to oh so many.
To that end, cheers to the men, the uncles, the fathers, the grandfathers, who also mother right along with us.
I was born a mother.
When I was young I was first a sister, then babysitter, cousin, auntie, devoted friend.
But I always and forever dreamed, and yearned to be a mother.
Which makes celebrating family and friends today all the more beautiful.
I am exploding with gratitude.
Whomever you mother, however you spend your day, may it be filled with love and laughter.
And so much happily ever after.
Cheers to mothers, around the world, caring and tending every minute of every day.
