I LOVE to travel.
I love lifelong friends.
I LOVE to restaurant hop.
And I love to travel to visit said friends tasting at their favorite local
restos.
So, imagine my sheer joy, when a few years ago, whilst on spring break on
Amelia Island, visiting the dearest of friends (fri-amily; more family than anything
after 35+ yrs, and Nurse Nancy helping deliver both my babies), Nancy and David told me, in a serious, stern tone and direct eye contact as I recall, “You HAVE to order the coffee and doughnuts for dessert.”
We were sitting at 29 South, a charming, chic little cottage of a spot in the historic Fernandina Beach town on Amelia Island.
Seated on the cozy, tiny front porch, with the Chef’s farm to table garden
within a stone’s throw, we were simply having the meal of our lives.
This is where N & D celebrate their birthdays, their special occasions, and
on this night, our decades and decades of friendship.
David, Mr. Meat and Potatoes, had the most delicious Pork Chop on Macaroni
Gratin with warm Blackberry Ginger Preserves.
It was a work of art entree.
Everything was as fresh and beautiful as it was delicious.
Of course we followed strict orders and saved room for dessert – and it was
unbelievable.
Worth every single calorie.
And I don’t even drink or like coffee.
Even as ice cream.
A few weeks later, we threw the most gorgeous luncheon party for O
Magazine, on my birthday.
And do you know what we served for the decadent dessert?
Coffee and Doughnuts, a la 29 South.
And again, years later, tomorrow, in all it’s original glory, at 6:15 am on
NBC5.
It works winter, spring or fall.
A timeless classic – done with just a few simple ingredients.
Tune in tomorrow, and I’ll share my secret for balancing out the healthy
ingredients and adding in some all natural protein.
Headed to Fernandina?
Make sure to stop by 29 South.
